Dangerous Goods Storage and Handling

Dangerous Goods are substances and articles that are potentially hazardous to people, property and the environment. They are classified on the basis of their immediate physical or chemical effects such as fire, explosion, corrosion, oxidation, spontaneous combustion or poisoning. Whatever their properties and their potential for injury and destruction, care is needed in their transport, storage and handling.

Health Safety Environment Australia can assess if Dangerous Goods stored in the workplace are done so in accordance with regulatory requirements. An assessment involves:

  • checking the quantity and types of dangerous goods stored at a workplace
  • checking how and where these goods are stored
  • ensuring quantities don’t exceed regulatory storage quantity cutoffs
  • checking the storage of incompatible chemicals
  • verifying that bunding requirements and emergency procedures are in place to deal with possible spills or leaks.

The Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Handling Regulations require that dangerous goods (eg certain chemicals and gases) be stored in accordance with the law. Significant penalties exist for organisations that fail to comply with legislation and relevant regulations.

If there is any doubt about the quantity, storage or handling of dangerous goods, Health Safety Environment Australia provide detailed reports with executive summaries and recommendation that prioritise safety issues and support your compliance program.
